The turbocharger (1) has a turbine (3), a compressor (5) and a rotor (20) in a housing (2). The rotor has a shaft (7) with a compressor wheel (6) of the compressor and a turbine wheel (4) of the turbine. An electric drive unit (13) is assigned to the compressor and the compressor output is regulated by the electric drive unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a turbocharger.
