Provided are a device and method that can effectively remove or reduce flicker that occurs in images taken with an XY-addressed scanning imaging element, such as a CMOS, in a lighting environment such as one with fluorescent lights that change in luminance. For each line in an image from which to remove flicker, an integral is computed from the signal values in that line. Said integrals are used to detect flicker components in each line in an image frame. The detected flicker components come from flicker waveforms of actual lighting appliances. The flicker can be effectively removed by the application of flicker correction coefficients comprising the detected flicker components reversed in phase.
