PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine which has relatively simple construction for surely preventing an excess pressure in a combustion chamber without worsening exhaust gas characteristics. SOLUTION: The engine 1 includes a relief valve 3 to be opened when cylinder pressure PCYL is valve opening pressure PCYLH or higher. Thereby, when the cylinder pressure PCYL rises during knocking, the relief valve 3 is opened to surely prevent an excess pressure in the combustion chamber. The relief valve 3 is arranged near an exhaust valve 7 on the opposite side to an intake valve 6, which hardly causes the influences of the heat of exhaust gas exhausted via the relief valve 3 on an intake system to prevent the thermal deterioration of components in the intake system. Furthermore, the exhaust gas exhausted via the opened relief valve 3 flows to the upstream side beyond a three-way catalyst 11 in an exhaust pipe 9 to prevent the worsening of exhaust gas characteristics.
