<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phenol resin making a skeleton originated in a vegetable as a main skeleton, an epoxy resin and an epoxy resin composition containing them, and to especially provide the phenol resin, the epoxy resin and the epoxy resin composition thereof having workability, heat-resistance and mechanical characteristics useful for an insulation material for an electric/electronic part (high reliability semiconductor sealing material or the like), various kinds of composite materials including a laminated board (printed wiring board, build-up substrate or the like) and CFRP, an adhesive, a coating or the like. <P>SOLUTION: The phenol resin is obtained by reacting phenols (compound having at least one phenolic hydroxyl group) containing 30 wt.% or more of an eugenol derivative and/or thymol with vanillin.
