Disclosed is a control device that is of a control valve used in the induction system of an engine and that is provided with: a control valve used in the induction system, provided to the induction system of the engine, and provided with an intake throttle valve that controls the amount of air intake of the engine or an EGR valve that controls the amount of EGR; and a control means that determines a target degree of opening of the control valve used in the aforementioned induction system in response to the operating conditions of the aforementioned engine, and regulates the degree of opening of the control valve used in the aforementioned induction system in a manner so as to match said target degree of opening; wherein the aforementioned control means alters the aforementioned target degree of opening over time from the target degree of opening determined in response to the operating conditions of the aforementioned engine when the aforementioned target degree of opening is maintained at the same level for at least a certain time period, detecting breakdown and preventing breakdown of the control valve used in the aforementioned induction system.
