PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phenol resin making a skeleton originated in a vegetable as a main skeleton, an epoxy resin and an epoxy resin composition containing these, and to especially provide the phenol resin, the epoxy resin and the epoxy resin composition having workability, heat-resistance and mechanical characteristics useful for an insulation material for an electric/electronic part (high reliability semiconductor sealing material or the like), various kinds of composite materials including a laminated board (printed wiring board, build-up substrate or the like) and CFRP, an adhesive, a coating or the like. SOLUTION: The phenol resin is obtained by reacting phenols (compound having at least one phenolic hydroxyl group) containing 30 wt.% or more of an eugenol derivative with formaldehyde (or synthetic equivalent substance thereof).
