PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically perform area division wherein two or more objects included in an image are separated and extracted based on the color characteristics. SOLUTION: An image area dividing device includes: a small area dividing part 1 excessively dividing an input image into a plurality of small areas based on the color characteristics; a target area selecting part 2 associating an internal area with an external area for each of a plurality of small areas and outputting them; a small area extending part 30 integrating an area out of the external area, which has the color characteristics similar to those of the corresponding internal area, with the internal area to output the integrated area as a small area extension area; an area similarity calculating part 6 calculating area similarity between a pair of small area extension areas; and a small area integrating part 7 determining that all of pairs of small areas with area similarity satisfying a predetermined standard belong to the same object and integrating them to obtain each object in the input image.
