PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for desulfurizing molten iron by which, when desulfurizing treatment is applied to the molten iron by using top addition through placing from a charging chute in combination with top addition through blowing from an top-blowing lance to supply a lime-based desulfurizing agent into the molten iron stirred with a mechanical stirring type desulfurizing apparatus, the desulfurizing agent can be added at high addition yield and at the same time, the flocculation of the added desulfurizing agents can be prevented and consequently, the desulfurization can be stably and highly efficiently performed. SOLUTION: In the method for desulfurizing the molten iron 3 using the mechanical stirring type desulfurizing apparatus, on the bath surface of the molten iron stirred with an impeller 4, first, the lime-based desulfurizing agent 6 is top-added through placing and then, after finishing the top addition through placing, the lime-based desulfurizing agent is top-added through blowing on the bath surface together with conveying gas through the top-blowing lance 5.
