The method involves reconducting an adjustable mass of exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine into a workspace i.e. cylinder, of the engine via an exhaust gas side by an adjustable valve device i.e. exhaust gas reconducting valve. A valve device is adjusted by comparison of air-fuel ratio detected by a detecting unit i.e. lambda probe, and air-fuel ratio computed by a computing unit. The valve device is adjusted into a predeterminable position if the result of comparison exceeds or falls below predeterminable threshold values. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion engine comprising a control device.
