PURPOSE: A ratchet-type tensioner is provided to make a tilt angle of a stop surface smaller than a tilt angle of a moving surface, thereby preventing a back displacement when starting an engine. CONSTITUTION: Pushing force of a ratchet pushing spring(160) is established higher than component force in a slide movement direction of a ratchet attaching piston(150). The component force is created from reaction force which is retreating a plunger(120) from a driving chain when starting an engine. Pushing force of the ratchet pushing spring is established smaller than component force in the slide movement direction of the ratchet attaching piston. The component force is generated from reaction force which is retreating a plunger from a driving chain in a case of excessive chain tension after starting the engine.
