A tool for spinning the wall of a recess formed in the nose-piece of an element such as a writing instrument to facilitate universal rotation of a ball in said recess, comprises an eccentrically disposed spinning disc 14 rotatably mounted in the face of a rotatable chuck 10 and concentrically surrounded by a spinning ring 22 mounted for rotation with respect to the chuck, said spinning disc and spinning ring being so arranged in the face of the chuck that a nose-piece positioned between the spinning surfaces of said disc and ring will be coaxial with the centre of rotation of the chuck during a spinning operation. The disc 14 has a shaft 15 mounted in ball bearings 16, 16<SP>1</SP> in a counterbore 13 in the chuck. A sleeve 18 surrounding the lower part of the disc shaft 15 receives the ball bearings 21, 21<SP>1</SP> of the spinning ring 22. The disc and ring are provided with rounded working edges 24, 24<SP>1</SP> respectively. In operation, the chuck is lowered on to a stationary writing tip 30 (Fig. 3), until the working edges 24, 241 of the disc and ring contact the tapered outer wall of the nose-piece 31. Rotation of the chuck will cause the disc and ring to roll around the surface of the nose-piece so working and springing the metal to provide sufficient clearance to permit the ball to rotate within the recess. The chuck is balanced by a counterweight 19. |
