<p>A network element (130, 330) for providing access control to a core network (120) of a cellular communication network for a wireless communication unit (150) operating within a communication cell supported by the network element (130, 330) is described. The network element (130, 330) comprises: a receiver for receiving a message from the wireless communication unit (150) comprising identity information; and logic (160), operably coupled to the receiver, for determining whether to permit the wireless communication unit access to the core network (120), based at least in part on the received identity information. The network element (130, 330) further comprises a memory element (170), operably coupled to the logic (160), and arranged to store a Location Update Request message (410) such that the logic retrieves the Location Update Request message (410) from the memory element (170) and forwards the message (435) to the core network (120), if the logic (160) determines that the wireless communication unit (150) is permitted access to the core network; and the logic (160) is arranged to send a null message to the core network (120) in addition to forwarding the message (435) to the core network (120).</p> |
