<p>A phosphorus compound is obtained by reacting an intermediate of formula PnNn-1 Cl2n+3 where n is an integer of at least 2 with methyl alcohol and then with ammonia. The reaction with methanol may be effected between -20 and +50 DEG C.; a solvent may be used; the ammonia is preferably anhydrous, gaseous or in solution. Preferably the ratio gram molecules NH3: gram molecules P is between 1 and 4. The products may have the schematic formula: PnNn-1Clx(NH2)y(OCH3) z where x+y+z=2n+3, some or all of the chlorine in the intermediate being replaced by NH2 and OCH3. The intermediates are obtainable by the reaction of PCl5 with anhydrous NH3 or NH4 Cl (see Specification 865,396 [Group III] and French Specification 1,157,097). The products are used in fireproofing cellulose fibres (see Division D1).ALSO:Fibrous cellulosic material is fireproofed by treatment with an aqueous solution of a phosphorus compound prepared by reacting the intermediate compound PnNn - 1 Cl2n + 3 (from PCl5 and anhydrous Nh3 or NH4Cl) where n is an integer of at least 2 with methyl alcohol and then ammonia (see Division C2), drying the treated fibrous material at or below 100 DEG C. and then heating it above 100 DEG C. The products may be of type Pn Nn - 1 Clx (NH2)y (OCH3)z where x + y + z = 2n + 3, some or all of the chlorine in the intermediates being replaced. Unfixed substances may be removed from the fibres by rinsing in water. The treating solution may also contain softening agents, water repellants, fungicidal agents or buffers, the latter including alkali metal salts or acetic, boric, phosphoric, pyrophosphoric, metaphosphoric, thiocyanic or fluoboric acids, formamide, hydrazine, urea, thiourea, cyanamide and hexamethylenetetramine.
