Solutions of thioethers and their use in the production of leather.

Preparing leather, comprises treating chromium(III)-containing semi-finished product in an aqueous environment with one or more thioethers comprising at least 10C per molecule, or with a substituted 1,3,5-tris-(4-hydroxy-benzyl)-[1,3,5]triazinane-2,4,6-trione compounds (III). Preparing leather, comprises treating chromium(III)-containing semi-finished product in an aqueous environment with one or more thioethers comprising at least 10C per molecule, or with a substituted 1,3,5-tris-(4-hydroxy-benzyl)-[1,3,5]triazinane-2,4,6-trione compounds of formula (III). R 2>isoamyl, tert.amyl, isopropyl, tert.butyl or sec.butyl; R 6>phenyl, benzyl or 1-4C-alkyl; and w : 0-1. Independent claims are included for: (1) a solution of thioether, which is a sulfur containing compound of formula (X 1>-A 3>-C(=O)-A 1>-S-A 2>-C(=O)-A 4>-X 2>) (I), or a substituted 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)sulfanylphenol compound of formula (II) in a solvent, preferably glycerin or oligomer of ethylene glycol, or a mixture of solvents containing glycerin or one or more oligomers of ethylene glycol; and (2) the leather obtained by the above process. X 1>, X 2>10-40C-alkyl, 10-40C-alkoxy or 6-14C-(hydroxy)aryl (all optionally substituted by 1-4C-alkyl), or nitrogen containing heterocycle; A 1>-A 4>spacer group of formula (CHR 1>) n; R 1>1-4C-alkyl or H; n : 0-10; R 3>R 2>; and R 4>, R 5>H, phenyl, benzyl or 1-4C-alkyl.
