Safety shield for medical needles

A medical needle shield apparatus includes a monolithic needle hub 64 for supporting a needle and having an integral collar 62 defining an interior cavity, and a shield 22 with proximal 21 and distal 14 ends and a lock 12 disposed between the ends. The proximal end 21 of the shield is configured to be received within the interior cavity of the collar in interlocking engagement, with the interior cavity of the collar defining notches 70 that receive tabs 80 on the proximal end of the shield to lock the shield in the collar and inhibit rotation of the shield within the collar. The shield is manually extensible between a retracted position and an extended position so that the distal end of the shield extends in parallel with the longitudinal axis of the needle. The lock captures a portion of the needle proximal the distal end of the needle to prevent displacement of the shield from the extended position. The distal end of the shield encloses at least a portion of the distal end of the needle when the shield is in the extended position.
