The filter has a housing case i.e. metallic extruded section, defining a channel-like flow chamber between an inlet opening and an outlet opening of a block-shaped housing (1) for passage of exhaust gases. A filter module (15) is embedded in the chamber. The case includes parallel wall sections in pairs such that a cross-section of the chamber is defined in a region of the filter module in rectangular shape or by the wall sections. The filter module has joined block-shaped filter elements (17) such that a cross-section of the filter module is adapted to the cross-section of the chamber.
