Provided is a method for improving flux in a membrane bioreactor system comprising one or more anoxic reactors of which the influent has a concentration of salts or inorganic oxides sufficient to cause scaling or inorganic fouling conditions comprising adding one or more cationic, amphoteric or zwitterionic polymers, or a combination thereof to said membrane bioreactor system. The polymer additive can be a cationic polymer of about 25,000 daltons, including various dimethylamines and polyethyleneimines, acrylates or methacrylates.
