Enzyme and methodology for the treatment of a biomass

Disclosed is an isolated or purified hemicellulase or xylanase enzyme of Alicyclobacillus acidocaldarius ATCC 27009, wherein the enzyme displays optimum enzymatic hemicellulase or xylanase activity at a temperature of greater than about 80°C, and at a pH of less than about 2, and wherein the enzyme is water soluble. Also disclosed is the use of the said enzyme in a method for the treatment of a biomass.
