Disclosed herein are pyrimidone derivatives of formula (I) where in the substituents are as defined within the specification, pharmaceutical compositions comprising said compounds, and methods of preparation. Such compounds are useful active ingredients in preventive and/or therapeutic treatment of neurodegenerative diseases caused by abnormal activity of glycogen synthase kinase 3-beta (GSK3-beta), such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, tauopathies, Wilson's disease, Huntington's disease, Prion disease, vascular dementia, acute stroke, traumatic injuries, cerebrovascular accidents, brain cord trauma, spinal cord trauma, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, peripheral neuropathies, retinopathies, glaucoma, non-insulin dependent diabetes, obesity, malaria, biopolar disorders, schizophrenia, osteoporosis, alopecia, cancers such as breast cancer, non-small cell lung carcinoma, thyroid cancer, T or B-cell leukaemia or virus-induced tumours.
