Apparatus for collecting particulate bone, from a bone having a bone surface, for use in combination with a bone cutting or drilling tool during an osteotomy or bone drilling procedure is disclosed. The bone cutting or drilling tool has a diameter and a distal end with a bone cutting or drilling element extending distally from it. The bone cutting or drilling element has a collection module with a proximal end and a distal end and a housing. The housing comprises an inner wall, an outer wall, an end wall, a suction port, and a flexible portion. The inner wall has distal and proximal ends, and is sized for sealing and removable engagement of the proximal end of the collection module with the distal end of the bone cutting or drilling tool. The outer wall is coaxially disposed around the inner wall and spaced from the inner wall and has a distal end extending distally from the distal end of the inner wall. The end wall is affixed to and caps the distal end of the outer wall. The end wall has a slot through it, which is sufficiently larger than the diameter of the bone cutting or drilling element to permit the bone cutting or drilling element to extend through it and to allow suctioning through the slot of bone particulate from an operating site. The suction port is disposed between the inner wall and the outer wall and is in suctioning communication with the slot. The flexible portion is disposed around the housing and has proximal and distal ends. The proximal end is affixed to the proximal end of the outer wall and the distal end extends distally from the end wall. The distal end of the flexible portion comprises an open cylindrical tube. The flexible portion of the collection module allows the open distal end of the cylindrical tube to follow irregularities in the bone surface when the collection module is in sealing engagement with the distal end of the bone cutting or drilling tool. |
