Disclosed is an N-substituted adenosine having the formula (I) or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein A is -CH2OH; B and C are hydroxyl; D is a purine defined in the specification A and B are trans with respect to each other; B and C are cis with respect to each other; C and D are cis or trans with respect to each other. Also disclosed is the use of said adenosine for treating an ophthalmic, neurological condition, cardiovascular disease, ischemic condition, diabetes, obesity or tachycardia in an animal in need thereof.
