PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition for a base tread capable of improving rolling resistance characteristics, rubber strength and processability at a sufficient balance, and a pneumatic tire including the base tread manufactured using it. SOLUTION: The rubber composition for the base tread includes a butadiene rubber containing a rubber component modified by a compound represented by formula (1), a silane coupling agent and silica. The silane coupling agent is obtained by copolymerizing a bonding unit B, in an amount of 1-70 mol%, with the total amount of a silicon-containing bonding unit A containing a specific thioester group and the silicon-containing bonding unit B including a specific thiol group.
