PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that facilitates correctly carrying out counter management with exchange of units. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is configured such that a first unit mounted removably in a main unit while having one or a plurality of replaceable parts is exchangeable with a second unit having the same parts as those of the first unit. The apparatus includes: a display unit; a memory which stores the value counted by a counter for the first unit that counts the life of parts in the first unit and the value counted by a counter for the second unit that counts the life of parts in the second unit; and a control unit which rewrites the value of the counter for the first unit based on the operation instruction information when input of the operation instruction information for changing the count of a part in the counter for the first unit that is decided to have reached the end of life is detected after the first unit having the part that is decided to have reached the end of life based on the value of the counter for the first unit stored in the memory is exchanged to the second unit.
