The device has a distance sensor mounted on a car and connected with a light unit, which is designed as a driving direction indicator. A control device controls the distance sensor and light unit, when the car falls below a pre-determined minimum speed. The control device has an actuating unit to actuate the light unit, as soon as a car is approached. The distance sensor is designed as a radar sensor, infrared sensor and light detection and ranging sensor. The light unit has a LED, which surrounds the distance sensor. The control device is connected with a data storage unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for warning the driver of the car.
