The external rear view mirror (1) has a base part (2) for determining at a vehicle and a mirror part (3) with housing (4) and a mirror surface (5). A swivel device (6) is provided with a double pivot hinge (7) with two swivel joints (8,9), where the former swivel joint is provided with a swivel axis (S-1) and the latter swivel joint is provided with another swivel axis (S-2). The mirror part is pivoted between handling position and front pivoting position by the former swivel joint and is pivoted between handling position and rear pivoting position by the latter swivel joint.
