PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic seal type chain tensioner to which an adjustment force downward with respect to a chain can be applied. SOLUTION: A cylinder 21 sealed at its upper opening due to the assembling of a seal member 23 and a hydraulic seal type tensioner unit 20 for constantly holding the tension of the chain by the elongation and the contraction of a rod 24 which slidably penetrates the seal member 23 are slidably assembled into a guide hole 12 of a lower opening of a housing 10 attached to a chain cover 1. The upper end of the rod 24 of the tensioner unit 20 is received at the lower face of a head cap 15 which closes the upper opening of the guide hole 12, a chain guide 3 is pressed at the bottom of the cylinder 21 which is slidably supported by the housing 10, holding the tension of the chain 4 constant.
