PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an active material for a secondary battery capable of achieving the secondary battery superior in large current charge and discharge characteristics and high in energy density, and the secondary battery using it. SOLUTION: The active material for the secondary battery has a polymer compound having a radical site in the side chain and having a polyphenylene vinylene structure and/or polyphenylene thiophene structure in the main chain.
