The method involves activating or deactivating a compressor (10) by a rotary switch (20) as a function of an operating mode of a motor vehicle (12) for compressing a medium when a brake device that is different from a brake operation device of the motor vehicle, is activated by an occupant i.e. rider, of the motor vehicle. The brake device is an engine brake, a retarder and a decompression brake of the motor vehicle. The switch is arranged at a steering column within a cab (18) and provides the driver with six different locking positions in order to stop brake performance of the brake device.
