<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve viewing angle characteristics of a liquid crystal display element (especially, a vertical alignment type). <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element includes: a first substrate and a second substrate, which are arranged with one surface facing each other; a liquid crystal layer arranged between the first substrate and the second substrate; a first polarizing plate arranged at the other side of the first substrate; a second polarizing plate arranged at the other side of the second substrate; and a first optical element arranged either between the first substrate and the first polarizing plate, or the first substrate and the liquid crystal layer. The first optical element includes: a recessed and projection section 50 including a plurality of faces 50a which tilt at about the same angle to the one face or the other face of the first substrate, and which are arranged in one direction; and an optical film 52 with negative uniaxial optical anisotropy, which covers the recessed and projection section. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT |
