<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel for a die which jointly has excellent machinability, rusting resistance and hot workability, and also has strength and toughness satisfying as those of a die product. <P>SOLUTION: The steel for the die has a composition comprising, by mass, 0.1 to <0.2% C, >0 to 1.2% Si, 1.2 to 2.0% Mn, 0.01 to 0.1% S, 0.5 to 1.5% Ni, 12.0 to 13.0% Cr, 0.3 to 0.8% Mo, 0.07 to 0.3% V, 0.1 to 1.0% Cu,≤0.05% Al, 0.03 to 0.1% N, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. Preferably, the Si content is controlled to 0.1 to 0.8%, the S content is controlled to 0.05 to 0.1% and the N content is controlled to 0.04 to 0.1%, and the content of O as inevitable impurity is controlled to≤0.02%.
