<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high quality image by decreasing positional errors in a latent image in an image forming apparatus that forms a latent image by exposing a rotating latent image carrier, and in an image forming system equipped with the apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: When a reference position signal is outputted from a photoreceptor encoder, each amount of periodic correction for an active horizontal synchronous signal H-sync "an amount of H-sync periodic correction" corresponding to a correction timing number is read from a memory in order from a correction timing number (profile No.) "1". Consequently, the period of the active horizontal synchronous signal H-sync is adjusted by the amount of H-sync periodic correction, and the writing position of the latent image on a photoreceptor drum is corrected by an amount corresponding to the amount of H-sync periodic correction. As a result, even if an error in the writing position of a latent image which results in a non-sine wave is contained in the rotation period of the photoreceptor drum, the writing position of the latent image can be corrected by a target amount of correction over the entire length of an image.
