PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for treating wastewater enhancing sedimentation property of sludge to improve processing speed (capacity) in a wastewater treatment in which a nitrification treatment and a denitrification treatment are carried out in separate reaction tanks using common biological sludge. SOLUTION: The method for treating the wastewater includes a nitrification process for an aerobic biological treatment of the nitrogen-containing wastewater in a nitrification tank, a denitrification process for an anaerobic biological treatment of the wastewater in a denitrification tank, a solid-liquid separation process for separating the wastewater discharged from the nitrification process and the denitrification process into the biological sludge and the treated water, and a sludge returning process for returning the separated biological sludge to the nitrification process and the denitrification process. Thus, this method is for biologically treating the wastewater using the common biological sludge in the nitrification process and the denitrification process, and a granule having nitrification capability is charged into the wastewater.
