<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane electrode assembly of which power generation performance can be improved. <P>SOLUTION: The membrane electrode assembly has a polyelectrolyte membrane, a pair of mutually opposed catalyst layers sandwiching the polyelectrolyte membrane, and mutually opposing anode gas diffusion layer and cathode gas diffusion layer sandwiching the polyelectrolyte membrane and the pair of the catalyst layer. The porosity of the anode diffusion gas layer is 60% or more and the porosity of cathode diffusion gas layer is larger than that of the anode diffusion gas layer.
