PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device capable of downsizing components constituting electronic ballast and a case and reducing cost, and capable of reducing CO2 for measures against global warming through minimization of a circuit loss. SOLUTION: In the on-off control of a switching element Q1 for power adjustment, a voltage Vds is applied to the switching element Q1 during an off-period of the same Q1, and a current flowing in an inductor L1 is gradually decreased. When a current IL of the inductor becomes nearly zero, static energy stored in the switching element Q1 at an-off state, generates damping oscillation between the switching element Q1 and the inductor L1. A control circuit 11 matches a timing for changing over the switching element Q1 from off to on with a timing when the voltage Vds impressed on it becomes minimum by the damping oscillation.
