Disclosed is a control device for an internal combustion engine, which is capable of suppressing the degradation of exhaust emission caused by unburned fuel contained in oil entered into a combustion chamber during valve stop control while preventing the inflow of new air into a catalyst at the time of valve return associated with the return from fuel cut. The control device for the internal combustion engine is provided with adjustable valve devices (34, 46) having a valve stop mechanism capable of changing the operation state of an intake valve (30) and an exhaust valve (32) between a valve operating state and a closing valve stop state. The control device for the internal combustion engine performs the valve stop control for changing the operation state of the intake valve (30) and the exhaust valve (32) to the closing valve stop state during the execution of the fuel cut. The control device for the internal combustion engine supplies fuel to a combustion chamber (14) before returning the operation state of the exhaust valve (32) to the valve operating state in cases when a return request from the fuel cut involving the valve stop control is detected. The control device for the internal combustion engine corrects the fuel supply amount in this case according to the amount of the unburned fuel contained in the oil entered from a crank chamber (16) side into the combustion chamber (14) during the fuel cut involving the valve stop control.
