PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To protect a lighting device at the time of abnormality of a light emitting element when an impermissible number of the light emitting diode elements are connected to the lighting device. SOLUTION: A lighting circuit 30 turns on light emitting diode elements 91A-91D by impressing voltage on serially connected light emitting diode elements 91A-91D. A voltage detecting circuit 21 measures a volume of voltage fall due to the light emitting diode elements 91A-91D and inputs the measured result to a determination circuit 20 as a voltage. The determination circuit 20 determines whether the voltage inputted from the voltage detecting circuit 21 exceeds the predetermined upper limit reference value V1 or is less than the predetermined lower limit reference value V2. When it is determined that the voltage exceeds the upper reference value V1 or is lower than the lower limit reference value V2, the determination circuit 20 controls the lighting circuit 30 to turn off or dims the light emitting diode elements 91A-91D.
