A power-driven tractormounted reaping-machine, of the type having a reciprocating cutter 30 mounted on a carrier 43, 44, 47 attached to the tractor so that the direction of reciprocation of the cutter is variable, is characterized in that the carrier is attached to the tractor by means including a universal joint (Fig. 3) which permits the carrier to swing either about a vertical axis or about a transverse horizontal axis, springs 49, 54 being provided for hold. ing the carrier against either of said movements until subjected to a predetermined load. The machine is carried on one end of a cross-shaft 18 incorporating adjustable arms 20, 25 secured to it by U-bolts 22 and connected to the ends of the power-lift linkage 11, 16 on the tractor; beams 29-on the cross-shaft support a motor for driving the cutter through the pulley 83 on the crank-shaft. A bracket 59 rotatably mounted on the crankshaft 45 supports the cutter 30 which is driven by a crank-disc 60 and pivoted Links 63, 66, 71. An arm 80 rigid with the bracket 59 is connected by a cable 81 to a hand-winch 82 on the tractor for fitting the cutter about the shaft 45. The crank-shaft is mounted on the cross-shaft 18 by a joint yieldable in either of two perpendicular directions. A bearing 44 for the shaft 45 is secured to an L-shaped bracket 38, 43. The bracket is swingably received on an L-shaped shaft 34, 37 on which it is retained by plates 39, 40. The vertical limb 34 of the shaft is similarly retained by plates 33 on a member secured to the cross-shaft 18. Leaf-springs 49, 54 terminating in arcuate yokes 51, 55 are mounted between the limbs of the L-shaped bracket 38, 43 and rollers 48 carried by the L-shaped shaft. Screws 53, 56 adjust the pressure of the yokes against the rollers; a load in excess of this pressure destroys the contact between the yoke and roller permitting the joint to swing about the other limb of the joint. |
