A handheld device with motion gesture recognition based locking is provided. The handheld device includes a motion gesture recognition module for detecting motion of the handheld device. The motion gesture recognition module comprises at least one sensor and a locking module configured to store a locking program. The locking program includes instructions for restricting access to predefined content stored on the handheld device or functions upon receipt of a lock activating signal; wherein said lock activating signal is a defined motion.
