The ballast (1) has an inverter (5) attached to a direct voltage intermediate circuit (7) for supplying operating power to the inverter, and a lamp circuit (20) attached to the inverter for feeding the operating power for a gas discharge lamp (2) present in the lamp circuit. An igniter (6) is attached to the lamp circuit for supplying ignition pulses for igniting the gas discharge lamp, and a capacitor (31) is attached to a power line (3) and the lamp circuit by bypassing an input circuit (4), the intermediate circuit, the inverter and the igniter.
