The method involves supplying a gas fuel mixture to individual cylinders over gas shuttle valves during operation of cylinder units (16, 17), where the gas shuttle valves are operated by a common cam shaft. The operation of the gas shuttle valves of one of the cylinder units is disrupted during shut-off of the cylinder unit by a valve lift shut-off up to reactivation of the cylinder unit to the other cylinder unit and up to achievement of synchronous rotation speed and a synchronous angular position between crankshafts (1, 2) of the cylinder units. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine.
