The membrane (12) has a set of projections (22) formed at surfaces (18, 20) of the membrane, where the membrane is coated with catalyst layers (14, 16) that are provided for catalyzing electrochemical reaction in a fuel cell. The projections comprise identical form and dimensions in a spatial direction. The projections are formed by the removal of material from a base body of the membrane through a laser. Recesses (24) are formed between the projections, and the surfaces of the membrane are turned towards the respective catalyst layers, where the projections have the form of fins. An independent claim is also included for a method for manufacturing a membrane for a fuel cell.
