PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader improved in accuracy in detection of an edge of a sheet-shaped medium. SOLUTION: The image reader 1-1 for reading an image of a sheet-shaped medium 6 conveyed on a conveyance path 3 by an automatic conveying device 5, includes: a light source 1 which is disposed opposite to one surface 61 of the medium; a backing member 4 which is disposed opposite to the other surface 62 of the medium and has a backing surface 41 opposed to the other surface of the medium; an imaging means 2 which is opposed to the one surface of the medium and disposed at a position different from the light source in a medium conveying direction and which images the medium and the backing surface on which a shadow of the medium is generated with light of the light source; and an image processing means 10 for producing image data containing the medium and the backing surface based on a result of imaging by the imaging means. The backing surface is tilted with respect to the conveying direction, and a gap G between the conveying path and the backing surface becomes smaller from a light source side to an imaging means side in the conveying direction.
