PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly perform cranking by a starter. SOLUTION: An ECU 30 automatically stops an engine 20 when a predetermined automatic stop condition is satisfied and then restarts the engine 20 by performing cranking with the starter 10 when a predetermined restart condition is satisfied. Further, the ECU 30 performs a meshing process for meshing a ring gear 22 with a pinion 15 through energization control of a coil 16 after satisfaction of the automatic stop condition and before satisfaction of the restart condition and performs cranking by controlling rotation of the pinion 15 through energization control of a motor 11 with the satisfaction of the restart condition. Particularly, the ECU 30 determines whether or not pinion slipping occurs, in which meshing of the pinion 15 and the ring gear 22 is released after performing of the meshing process and before the satisfaction of the restart condition, and controls driving of the pinion 15 based on the determination result.
