In a compressor rear frame for a gas turbine engine having a thin outer casing which rotatably supports a rotor, at least one load-transmitting strut is provided between the outer casing and an inner casing, the strut being rigidly connected at its inner end to the inner casing so as to move in unison therewith and connected to the outer casing sufficiently remote from the rigid flanges of the latter to permit substantially unrestrained radial deflection of the outer casing with respect to the inner casing. In the gas turbine engine shown in Fig. 1, a shaft bearing 26 located between compressor 20 and turbine 18 is supported from the inner wall 36 of diffuser passage 37. The radial, axial and torsional loads imposed on the inner wall 36 by the bearing 26 and by the gas forces acting on stator blading 16 are transmitted to the outer wall 32 of the diffuser through radial struts 42, Figs. 1, 2 and 3. Each strut is in two parts, butt-welded together at 48, the radially outer part being a casting or a sheet-metal fabrication. Each strut is attached by fillet welds 64, 66 to the inner wall 36 and to a reinforcing channel 54. Further reinforcement is provided by gussets 73 extending between adjacent channels 54, and gussets 68, 70 extending between each strut 42 and manifolds 56, 58. A flange 45 on each strut 42 is butt-welded to the outer wall 32. Differential thermal expansion of the inner wall 36 and struts 42 with respect to the outer wall 32 is accommodated by radial deflection of the latter, flanges 40, 41 being sufficiently far from the struts 42 to avoid imposing restraint on this deflection. Some of the struts 42 are closed at their inner ends by caps 72, Figs. 2 and 3, so that they can be used as ducts for conveying air bled from the compressor for cabin use or boundary layer control. The bleed air enters the manifolds 56, 58 through openings 74 and then passes by way of openings 76 into the channel 54 and thence through openings 80 into the struts 42. Other struts 42, shown in Fig. 1, are open at their inner ends and are used for the passage of leakage air from a seal 82 to atmosphere.
