858,661. Aerating bacterial sludge. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Dec. 5, 1957 [Dec. 5, 1956], No. 37140/56. Class 111. [Also in Group II] A device for aerating bacterial sludge comprises a drum rotatable about its axis, the perimeter of the drum consisting of a single layer of a sheet or sheets of unflattened expanded metal or synthetic resin sheet in like form. As shown, the drum is star-shaped but it may alternatively be square, polygonal, circular or elliptical. In one application the shafts 8 of two such star-shaped drums are mounted upon opposite walls of a concrete tank and are geared to an electric motor such that the starpoints dip successively into liquid contained in the tank. Liquid is lifted during the rotation and falls back through the perforations of the expanded sheet into the tank, thereby effecting aeration. The sheet is secured to frames by plates 14 clamped in position by bolts 15 and nuts 16. The device may also be floated so that the surface of the drum dips into the liquid at a constant depth, irrespective of the liquid level.
|
