An apparatus such as an electronic pen comprises a sensor for generating a plurality of sensing signals in response to radiation emitted by an external infra-red source, such as a plasma display panel, means for extracting synchronisation information from the plurality of sensing signals and means for determining a position of the electronic pen relative to the infra-red source based on the synchronisation information and timing information of the sensing signals.
