PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multiple layer sliding member exhibiting an excellent wear resistance when it is used under a high load condition, and a rack guide in a rack and pinion type steering apparatus using it. SOLUTION: The multiple layer sliding member 51 has a back metal 52 made of a steel sheet, a porous metal sintered layer 53 integrally formed on the surface of the back metal 52, and an outer layer 54 consisting of a synthetic resin composition filled in holes and gaps of the metal sintered layer 53 and applied on the surface, and the synthetic resin composition comprises nylon 11 or nylon 12.
