PURPOSE: An overheat protection method of a motor driven power steering system is provided to prevent errors in the temperature setting value and to improve stability of a motor driven power steering system by controlling a steering current with the exact temperature setting value. CONSTITUTION: An overheat protection method of a motor driven power steering system comprises the steps of: measuring temperature in a temperature sensor attached to an electronic controller(S1); checking whether or not the temperature measurement value, the temperature of the measured electronic controller, is larger than the temperature setting value just before stored in the electronic controller(S2); if the temperature measurement value is larger than the temperature setting value, measuring a steering current, the current of a steering motor in a current sensor attached to the electronic controller(S3); checking whether or not the measured steering current flows(S4); and, if the measured steering current flows, outputting the temperature setting value which a first filtering value is added to the temperature setting value(S5).
