PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect noise, especially white stripe noise, from image data appropriately, and to remove the noise. SOLUTION: A first stripe detection circuit 21 detects the stripe noise whose density changes abruptly as compared with the periphery. A first stripe removal circuit 23 substitutes the density of a pixel that is detected to be noise for that of a pixel that is near the pixel and is not detected as noise. A second stripe detection circuit 22 detects a thin stripe whose change in density is smaller than the first stripe detection circuit 21. A second stripe removal circuit 24 uses a smoothing coefficient according to the noise for smoothing image data, where the noise is reduced by the first stripe removal circuit 23. In this manner, an image processing section 20 removes only noise having large density difference to the periphery by the substitution of the pixel for removing the thin noise by the smoothing processing, thus removing the white stripe noise appropriately without deteriorating an original image.
