PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small and inexpensive bearing malfunction detection device for highly accurately detecting a malfunction of a bearing supporting a rotor, a bearing malfunction detection method, an image forming apparatus, and a disk drive apparatus. SOLUTION: A bearing malfunction detection device 1 for detecting the existence of a malfunction of a bearing of a rotary device 10, in which a rotor held by the bearing turns around includes: a stop time measurement section 2 for measuring, from a specific speed of rotation of the rotor, a stop time that the rotor takes to stop turning around; a storage section 3 for prestoring a standard stop time serving as a standard for determining a bearing malfunction; and a stop time comparison section 4 for making a comparison between the stop time, measured by the stop time measurement section 2 and the standard stop time. This makes it possible enables a small and inexpensive bearing malfunction detecting device of simple arrangement for detecting a bearing malfunction in a noncontact manner, before the rotary device 10 becomes incapable of rotation and to highly accurately detect the existence of a bearing malfunction over a wide range of applications.
